ORGATEC 2026: 3 Key Takeaways

ORGATEC, one of the leading international trade fairs for the modern working world, returned to Cologne, Germany, from 27–30 October 2026. Held at Koelnmesse, the event brought together furniture manufacturers, designers, architects and workplace specialists from across the globe to explore the latest innovations, products and ideas shaping office and contract interiors.

With this year's theme, 'From Rooms to Relationships: Designing Spaces in an Ever-Changing World', the focus was firmly on how workplaces are evolving to support changing working habits, collaboration and the needs of modern businesses. With so much to see, we picked out three key takeaways from this year's exhibition.

1. Systems over standalone products

One noticeable trend was the move towards complete furniture systems rather than individual, standalone products. Manufacturers are increasingly launching coordinated ranges designed to work together, creating cohesive solutions that can be configured to suit different spaces and requirements.

This approach offers greater flexibility for workplace designers, making it easier to create consistent interiors while accommodating different working styles, from individual workstations to collaborative areas and meeting spaces.

It's a shift towards thinking about the wider workspace, rather than designing products in isolation.

2. Colour continues to lead the way

Colour was another prominent feature throughout the exhibition, with warm neutrals, earthy tones and carefully placed pops of red appearing across furniture, finishes and interior schemes.

The modern office is becoming less corporate and more reflective of the people and businesses that use it. Colour plays an important role in this, helping to introduce personality, create atmosphere and establish a stronger sense of identity within the workplace.

Rather than relying solely on traditional office palettes, designers are continuing to experiment with bolder combinations and natural tones to create more welcoming, characterful environments.

3. Functionality as well as style

Furniture is being asked to do more than ever before. Dual-purpose products, clever design features and integrated functionality were evident throughout the show, demonstrating how manufacturers are finding new ways to make furniture work harder.

From products that serve multiple purposes to practical features that improve everyday usability, the focus is on combining thoughtful design with genuine functionality.

Aesthetics remain important, but there's an increasing expectation that products should offer more than just good looks. Durability, adaptability and practical details all have a part to play in creating furniture that delivers long-term value.

Looking ahead

ORGATEC 2026 provided plenty of insight into the direction of the workplace furniture industry, with a clear emphasis on adaptable systems, considered use of colour and products that combine substance with style.
